The air element, with its qualities of lightness, clarity, and movement, has captivated human imagination for millennia. Ancient cultures recognised its power, attributing it to various deities and gods. In Greek mythology, four wind gods governed the cardinal directions and seasons, while in Hinduism, Vayu reigned as the primary deity of winds and breath.
The Subtle Winds Within
Within our bodies, subtle energetic winds known as Vayus correspond to our physical and emotional actions. These include:
- Udana Vayu: Governs upward and outward movements like speech and exhalation
- Prana Vayu: Circulates life-force energy around the heart and lungs
- Samana Vayu: Regulates digestion in the body’s center
- Vyana Vayu: Pervades the entire body
- Apana Vayu: Controls downward and outward energy, grounding us to the earth

The concept of Prana, often translated as “life force energy” or “breath,” goes beyond mere respiration, encompassing the energy behind each inhalation and exhalation.
Experiencing the Air Element
To connect with the air element, try these practices:
- Touch: Feel the wind on your skin, noting its temperature, force, and direction.
- Taste: Incorporate bitter and astringent flavors into your diet, such as kale, cacao, pomegranates, and black tea.
- Sight: Observe how air moves the world around you, from gentle breezes to powerful storms.
- Smell: Pay attention to air quality in your living spaces and regularly refresh them with open windows.
- Sound: Listen to the wind’s whispers through trees or the myriad sounds carried by air waves.
Pranayama and Yoga
Breathing exercises, or pranayama, offer a direct connection to the air element. Try Sama Vritti (equal breathing) to start your day, inhaling and exhaling for an even count. This practice can evolve into a meditation technique, focusing on the breath to cultivate mindfulness
- In yoga, poses that open the heart and chest area can enhance your connection to the air element. Gentle backbends like supported bridge pose, cobra, and upward-facing dog are excellent choices. Incorporate flowing, light movements in your practice to embody the air element’s qualities
